It provides cost-efficient and resizable capacity while automating time-consuming administration tasks such as hardware provisioning, database setup, patching, and backups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>What is DMS?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/dms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AWS Database Migration Service<\/a> (AWS DMS) is a cloud service that makes it easy to migrate relational databases, data warehouses, NoSQL databases, and other types of data stores. You can use AWS DMS to migrate your data into the AWS Cloud, between on-premises instances (through an AWS Cloud setup), or between combinations of cloud and on-premises setups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">In this blog, we will be performing a heterogeneous migration from the MySQL database on an EC2 instance to AWS Aurora using the DMS service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Benefits of DMS&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Low Cost &#8211; Pay only for the compute resources used during the migration process and any additional log storage.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\"><li>Easy to use &#8211; Does not require any driver or application installation, and neither requires any changes to the source database most of the time.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\"><li>Reliable &#8211; Multi-AZ option allows you to have high availability for database migration and continuous data replication by enabling redundant replication instances.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\"><li>Minimal Downtime &#8211; In the presence of DMS your source database is continuously replicated, even when your source database remains operational. The target can be a database in Amazon EC2 or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.workfall.com\/learning\/blog\/how-to-improve-application-availability-with-amazon-rds-proxy\/\">Amazon RDS<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Heterogeneous Database Migration<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/dj3k8OEPVRNJindYA9aNQ9BsqdGJwR2w8kZrVWxjBiSb39GpG2qnFB2TqxHiGvHvVx3Rws25M6XU0OKtluyaYDCPukNZr1be8ifWKuQaHqm9PAISGosyak25zyHOi4QhfCeXijmsW4N6n0r9Wp1OrUURSqIex-Y1XpvYmpoRjl5HX-wX_UKkmhwJ\" alt=\"Heterogeneous Database Migration\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">The source and target databases engines are different, like in the case of Oracle to Amazon Aurora, Oracle to PostgreSQL, or Microsoft SQL Server to MySQL migrations.In the first step first use the AWS Schema Conversion Tool to convert the source schema and code to match that of the target database, and then use the AWS Database Migration Service to migrate data from the source database to the target database. Secondly, All the required data type conversions gets automatically done by the AWS Database Migration Service during the migration.The target is the database in Amazon EC2 or Amazon RDS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Development and Testing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/Mo-rYKlj3kTMVDKJEorlCKgTlyIEcEBKolqfWLblqI7thLwsnJuY1QgEW1HF19biCqSQBK49MG_QkT0wprN3xw2nirRPEhINhoU65jmfIDgH9kbtMTW1fCrdby7R8i3xYpE_nHFwY6G0XWsM2zt-I6tG0_NQuHuwTKMRqdPX525RAVd5nRf3vmoQ\" alt=\"Development and Testing\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">DMS can also be used out of the cloud for development purposes. This can be done for homogeneous and heterogeneous migrations, and you can use this feature with all supported database engines.For example, one of the source databases can be in your own premises outside of AWS, while the second one in Amazon EC2, and the third one is an Amazon RDS database. The target can be a database in Amazon EC2 or Amazon RDS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Continuous Data Replication&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/aEqq_paNfyZE7UPlpEa_CrOQkxktAMF2c37H76u3MYmZOYlZm7dj0KOG8MdFOT4kjMz4ipdMnFyCQcJcBDf4JpRLfJt-fRACBYcx9kYX8VvO0EfLlvMHGrjQ8zsEnS5ooHK4p4blo2qRumRLF4Sd1-0MNqVckM3gul9-s8fWWxfiMfZx2ES9bWf4\" alt=\"Continuous Data Replication\u00a0\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">You can use DMS for both homogeneous and heterogeneous data replications for all supported database engines. Continuous data replication has a multitude of use cases including Disaster Recovery instance synchronization, geographic database distribution and Dev\/Test environment synchronization. DMS uses both homogeneous and heterogeneous data replications for all supported database engines. It is easy to replicate data from a single database to one or more target databases or data from multiple source databases can be consolidated and replicated to one or more target databases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Companies Using Database Migration Services<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/yd3Ux8k1I-uiSp9_Jp2dh3O9Dwi0mV3oiE5pdT1fX7_HKdkQSEdCI9_IWttEVeMsDCOAK0fgYu2yZU86u42cwLqs1OYL0lzIoB-Y63jAZDgUJwQPIHyOsdC5V4KaLtmbRFSch2LnYfB7i_l8aIMEmrAWyH1MscTgBshTePyBMlwivsJmquuFoi4R\" alt=\"Companies Using Database Migration Services\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Let\u2019s do hands-on:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Prerequisites:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prepare the source database server:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Create a user which will be used for replication with proper permissions.<\/li><li>Modify mysql.cnf to allow replication.<\/li><li>Allow the firewall\/security groups to access this instance.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>We will be performing the following steps for the migration:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Create a replication instance<\/li><li>Create target and source endpoints<\/li><li>Refresh the source endpoint schemas<\/li><li>Create a migration task<\/li><li>Monitor your migration task<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Create a replication instance<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Open the AWS DMS console, and choose Replication Instances from the navigation pane.<\/li><li>Choose Create replication instance.<\/li><li>Enter your replication instance name, description, instance class, Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC), and Multi-AZ preference.<br>Note: Be sure to choose an instance class that&#8217;s sufficient for your migration workload. If the instance isn&#8217;t sufficient for your workload, you can modify the replication instance later.<\/li><li>From the Advanced section, choose your VPC security groups, or choose the default option.<\/li><li>Choose Create replication instance.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Create target and source endpoints<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Open the AWS DMS console, and choose Endpoints from the navigation pane.<\/li><li>Choose to Create endpoint to create the source and target database.<\/li><li>For Endpoint type, choose Source.<\/li><li>Enter the endpoint&#8217;s engine-specific information, such as the server name, port, SSL mode, or the Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) bucket name, if you use Amazon S3 as the source.<\/li><li>Choose Run Test.<\/li><li>After the test is complete, choose Save.<\/li><li>Repeat steps 3-6, but for Endpoint type, choose Target.<br>Note: Be sure to complete this step for both the target and the source.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Refresh the source endpoint schemas<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Open the AWS DMS console, and choose Endpoints from the navigation pane.<\/li><li>Select the source endpoint, and choose Refresh schemas.<\/li><li>Choose Refresh schemas.<br>Note: You must refresh the source so the source schemas appear in the table mappings when you create an AWS DMS task.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Create a migration task<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Open the AWS DMS console, and choose Database migration tasks from the navigation pane.<\/li><li>Choose to Create a task.<\/li><li>Specify the Task identifier, Replication instance, Source database endpoint, Target database endpoint, and Migration type. Choose one of the following migration types:<br>Migrate existing data only\u2014Use this migration type for one-time migrations.<br>Migrate existing data and replicate ongoing changes\u2014Use this migration type to migrate large databases to the AWS Cloud with minimal downtime.<br>Migrate ongoing replication changes\u2014Use this migration type when you have already migrated the existing data and want to synchronize the source database with the target MySQL database hosted on the AWS Cloud.<\/li><li>From the Task Settings section, modify the task as needed.&nbsp;<\/li><li>From the Table mappings section, choose Guided UI.<\/li><li>Choose to Add a new selection rule, and specify your Schema and Table name.<br>Note: To change or transform the source schema, table, or column name of some or all of the selected objects, expand the Transformation rules section. Choose to Add a new transformation rule. Then select the Target, Schema name, and Action.<\/li><li>Choose to Create a task.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Monitor your migration task<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Use the Task Monitoring view to monitor the migration tasks. You can see which tables have been migrated successfully and which tables are in the process of migration. Pay attention to the following message types:<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>I &#8211; indicates an informational message<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>W &#8211; indicates warnings<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>E &#8211; indicates errors that occurred when migrating the database<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\"><li>Verify that the databases have been migrated successfully by connecting to the source and target instances through the terminal.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Migrating from MySQL to Amazon Aurora<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">When migrating from MySQL to Amazon Aurora, use engine native tools when possible. During migration, schemas and tables are migrated to the same name on the target. If you want to migrate tables to a different schema on target, create a mapping rule to specify the new schema on the target database:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Navigate to the AWS DMS console to quickly get started. Click on \u201cCreate replication instance\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/OxCjKE7TqO5tYgVAVeKEM3j9Tq7Ru-xHnaWn4tuoHJuXpRKhRkptWN-uEACScL0_MNcyCE7vh_fWoohTf8dCSOr_mg1CV4RTHS23_dygiWvHULDTF3YRIKIbnu5l77XM0KRvl-xU5Abje74kirDekQJ0TC07OF3d0dXDfHN4gjJ4RsYVRvTeex-x\" alt=\"AWS DMS\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Fill in the details as required.
